Have you ever found yourself fighting a battle within? Are you striving, stressing, and struggling? If so, there is great news! Jehoshaphat was a real man facing a large, well-prepared and heavily armed band of soldiers. Donned in their glistening gear, supreme strength and pompous pride, the massive army prepared for a battle they expected to be an easy win. Meanwhile, Jehoshaphat’s army was toast. Without a miracle, they would surely be defeated.
Jehoshaphat received an intelligence report declaring that a huge force was on its way from beyond the Dead Sea to fight him. There was no time to prepare. Jehoshaphat was worried, but he didn’t let fear overtake him. He prayed and declared God as the almighty ruler of Heaven and earth, full of power and might. God already knew this about Himself, but the fact that Jehoshaphat spoke it out in faith moved God and gave Jehoshaphat victory before his battle even began! Today, God’s laws remain. Our faith moves God, not our problems, complaints or fears.
Jehoshaphat’s confidence began to soar as suddenly Zechariah’s son, Jahaziel, began to speak a word from the Lord. He said, "Attention everyone- Don’t be afraid; don't pay attention to this multitude of hooligans. This is God's war, not yours. You won't have to lift a hand in this battle; just stand firm, and watch God's saving work. Don't be afraid, don't waver. March out boldly tomorrow. God is with you."
Jehoshaphat then knelt down, bowed his face to the ground, and worshiped God. The next morning, Jehoshaphat’s small army rose early. They were ready to march into the wilderness when Jehoshaphat proclaimed these words, “Believe firmly in your God, and your lives will be firm”! They began to sing, “Give thanks to God, His love never quits”.
Once everyone started shouting and praising, God positioned ambushes against the mighty army as they were attacking Jehoshaphat’s minuscule but mighty team. The large army mistakenly attacked their own and massacred them. Further confused, they went for each other and all ended up dying. As Judah came up over the rise, looking into the wilderness for the mass of barbarians, they came upon a killing field of dead bodies—not a living soul was among them.
Jehoshaphat didn’t strive in his own doing. He didn’t worry himself sick about the mountain before him, he didn’t listen to the voices of the enemy, and he didn’t give into defeat, fear and discouragement. He prayed and believed the word God brought to him, and he marched in faith, praising God through the entire battle. Does God want us to do the same when we face our giants? Yes. Does it stop there? No.
After the war, Jehoshaphat and his people returned to carry off the goods. They found more than they could carry off—equipment, clothing, and valuables. It took three days to haul it all away. God gave Jehoshaphat joyful relief from his enemy, ruler ship as king, and a fulfilled life. He heard no more from his enemy. As long as Jehoshaphat reigned, peace reigned.
Like Jehoshaphat, when God sets us free, we are free indeed. We must trust God to be our shield in battle, and stop telling God how big our storm is and start telling our storm how big our God is. As we face the giants in our daily life, we must rely on God to be the One at the forefront on the battlefield. If God be for us, who can be against us? This is God’s victorious answer.
